![]() It smelt of a pile-on from the very first, an opportunity for some to use it to distract people from the much more important (and vastly less defensible) shambles in our federal parliament. The reaction by some politicians and commentators to Waters’ endorsement of the campaign is what interests me. So while gendered toys may not lead directly to domestic violence they may well play a small part in creating the rigid gender divides that do make women more vulnerable. We also know that societies that have rigid divides around gender, where few women are in positions of power, also have higher levels of domestic violence and, in fact, violence in general. If a mother (and father) see the world through a rigidly gendered lens, then their kids probably will too. ![]() ![]() ![]() We’re always being told how important a job mothering is, particularly in the early years, so it makes sense that the choices mothers make – about food, about toys, about all sorts of things – would influence how their kids see the world. ![]()
